July 30, 2001 Just For Today
Just for today –
I will not worry, I will not fret. I
will be patient and trusting. I
will keep my thinking positive. I
will be loving, harmonious, wise, and understanding. Just for today –
I will do what is expected of me cheerfully.
I will find satisfaction in little things. I will be willing to change old patterns of thought and
action. I will not cling to set
ways. I will be flexible and
adaptable. Just for today –
I will not dwell on aches and pains. I
will think health. I will give
thanks for the life and strength of God that renew and restore me.
I will know that God is healing me now. Just for today –
I will not look back and long for other days.
I will not look forward to some time when things will be better.
I will be happy right where I am, at this present time, in this present
moment. From Daily Word – author unknown
What a beautiful notion to be able to truly enjoy the
day we are experiencing. I have
carried this writing around for many years.
I used to start each day in prayer and meditation in my office before
anyone else arrived. Most of the
time it began with reciting the affirmations I wrote and reading aloud this
passage. I am a romantic who always remembers only the good
times from the past, and dream of a future that is filled with only bliss.
That is why I have to slow down and be satisfied with the moment and find
the beauty it has to offer. After
all, today is all we really have. Ecclesiastes, a book of the Old Testament, is
interesting to read. Much of it
deals with the inevitability of certain events in our lives, both good and bad,
and the fact that life can also be unfair.
The advice the author gives is summed up in Chapter 9 Verse 7 and 12:
“Go, eat your bread with enjoyment, and drink your wine with a merry heart;
for God has long ago approved what you do . . . For no one can anticipate the
time of disaster. Like the fish
taken in a cruel net, and like birds caught in a snare, so mortals are snared at
a time of calamity, when it suddenly falls upon them.” But what about those who seem to find themselves in
the midst of calamity or disaster? How
can they possibly find any blessing let alone spirituality in the current day?
I have read the writing above regularly during the tough times and found
it to be an effective road map and when I live it for that day, a source of
strength. Each day is an opportunity to commune with our soul
and reveal our soul to others if we choose to do so. Try reading this writing in the morning for a week and see if
it enriches the day. Too much to
ask? Well, try it just for
today! With respect, acceptance, and love, Richard |
